Causes
Family history of kidney stones can increase the risk of stone formation. Thus, it is necessary that people with family history of formation of stones in kidneys get themselves checked in every 6 months.
Complications of Kidney Stones :
In addition to causing severe pain, untreated kidney stones can eventually cause kidney failure by damaging the nephrons present in the kidney. This is called Chronic Kidney Failure or Chronic Renal Failure.
As the kidneys lose their ability to function, a patient is left with the only choice of dialysis or kidney transplantation.

Common Factors
Who are more likely to develop Kidney Stones :
Why some people are more disposed to the formation of kidney stones is not clearly understood. Though a few factors have been known to be commonly correlated with the incidence of these. The greatest factor that increases the risk of kidney stones is less intake of water. Those people who are in the habit of drinking less than 1 litre of water per day are more likely to develop kidney stones. Eating a diet that is high in protein, sodium, and sugar can also be one of the factors responsible for stone formation. Other risk factors include obesity and drinking water that is high in oxalate, uric acid, phosphate, sodium, and calcium. It is known that people who develop kidney stones once stand a high chance of developing it again in the future.
